Optimal planning of future distribution grids under consideration of Smart Grids and Smart Market

The smart planning research project take into account various aspects of the 7th Framework Program of the EU and other related programs of EU member states. This project is carried out by consortium of 6 partners from 3 European countries, composed of research universities, distribution system operators and industrial grid supplier. Furthermore, there are sets of distribution system operators as advisory groups, which consult the consortium.

This project focuses on planning of electricity distribution grids considering smart grid technologies and smart market activities. New planning guidelines have to be developed which take into account smart grid technologies and smart market options, based on the optimum between grid development and smart market activities, to increase the global welfare and reduce the overall costs. Current planning guidelines for electricity distribution grids do not consider smart grid technologies and smart market activities. This leads to conservative grid planning associated with huge investments.
